Hello
I am wondering How come laos people can't stick together on anything, man
there is alot of laos musician that is second to none, but the problem is
they can't stick together. I don't understand why...
lost need help
I have felt the same way. I played in locaI band before. I played guitar
and key board. I wasn't really good but just enough to get by. I've quit
for about eight years now because I had no time for it.
In US, there are not many Laotian bands staying together for long. Some the
1). Time factor. Most of the band members are not working in same shift.
Some works nights and some works days. It is really hard to get together
more often. Since everybody has work to do, there is no time to practice
especially when becoming a family man or woman.
2). Lack of leadership. Some of the band has no leadership at all. They get
together as music lovers. They must have somebody to knows about music's and
have good leadership to lead them in practicing and managing.
3). Selfishness. It doesn't matter, if it is a small band or a large group,
selfishness has always been the main reason for breaking the band apart. I
have seen some player that thinks of himself as a better player than others,
he wouldn't take any ideas from other members at all.
4). Different hobbies. Every member has his or her own hobbies. Some likes
to play cards on the weekend instead of practicing. Some likes to go hunting
or fishing.
5). Family problems. Wife wants their husband to spend time with the family
on the weekend doing family's things.
6) Talk behind the back. When one member starts talking behind others' back,
the problem starts broaden. Remember woman wouldn't take anything for
granted if somebody talk bad about her husband.
There is no compare between the bands in US and in Laos. Why? Because in
Laos that's the only thing they do all day. It's their main occupation. If
you are a band member your job is to practice and play in the gigs. Over
here, you have spent a lot of money for the instruments but no time to
practice. There wouldn't be any progress at all.
Right now, most of the good player turned to one-man band. Don't give me
wrong, one-man band shows that he or she coulnd't get along with others. To
tell you the truth, anybody can play one-man band if you spend a little time
to record midi files or sometime people just use somebody else's. I admit
that it sounds good but when somebody try to record songs with one-man band,
it doesn't sound like song at all. Believe me I played in the school band
when I was in Laos. If you do not believe me, take time to comepare the
cassette that made in Laos and one made by some one-man band studio in US
today. I have bought at least 150 Lao music cassettes (to help Lao
musicians). I have never listened the one that recorded by one-man band moe
thean once. The band must have more than one instrument to be a complete
band. Lao word is "vong donh tree". Vong or phong mean relationship or
together not one man. In my area, there are four one-man bands. Most of them
came to me for reading intruction. I have helped them with English
instruction. It's not that I support them. Instead I've tried to talk them
to get back together and form a good band. You know what, none of them says
good thing about others.
I'm writing some songs for friend of mine. So far I have finished about 15
songs. Most of my songs I have written are in slow style but it's
convertible to other styles as well. If you need help on writing songs, I
think I can help you. Just let me know what kind of song you want and what
it about.
