What happened to our old folks Lao singers?

Like Khamterm Sanoubanh, Ko Keo Kampha, Ko Viseth, etc....? Did they
have any new songs released after 1975? I listened to many new Lao
songs by many new Lao singers and they were terrible. Just plain
terrible.

Khamterm's too old, hardly to memorise the lyrics
Kor Keokampha's bald, too ugly to be in DVD,
Kor Viseth still singing but hardly to catch
the breath and his daugther's in his new DVD..

Khamterm still singing from time to time at the Snack Bar, Lane Xang
Hotel and at Wansana Guest House in Vientiane. You have to be pretty
lucky to catch him, I know he frequented the Snach Bar at the Lane Xang
Hotel at lunch time and occassionally, people would as for special
request for him to sing. As for Wanasan GH, some night he's there and
some he isn't. The last time I saw him performed was at the Snack Bar
at lunch time. At night time the name change from Snack Bar to 'Snatch
Bar', so you only see the Thao Houa Gnou out there and Khamterm do not
entertain that kind of crowd.

Kor Viseth is living in AZ and been known to jam with the local Lao
band when they have official functions.

You're correct though, most of the good song with meaningful lyrics are
pre 75'. All the new song now need better writters and composers. So
far, nothing has caught my interest, as far as the new stuff.

I thought I was the only one noticing this. I love Lao songs pre '75.

Khamteum may be in his 60s but he is still pretty active (an oldie
goldie). He still travels to France and the US. The last time I saw him
was in Vientiane in late 2000. He sang his oldie favorite songs
(including Thammasart Phou Khao Khuay) for us and other customers,
mostly Thai tourists, at the restaurant Suan Paa Thong (Golden Fish
Garden restaurant) located somewhere on the route toward Dong Dok.

Here are some photos of Khamteum when he was visiting France in 2003.

The guy singing KidtheungBan has a nice voice. The music itself is
beautiful. Probably a new young singer of this new generation. The
singer of LeumNongBorlong reminds me of William Dithavong. Can someone
confirm it's him?

What happen to Bounkerd Nouhoung brothers? I've not head of them
lately. I like their songs. They are whom I truely thought of Lao
artist that have good voice without sounding like Siamese, or what not.

noi,

yes, KidtheungBan is a lovely song blended with a soft nice voice. I
enjoy listening to songs like this. I suspect the singer is probably
new as you have stated.

Do you know who played all the lead guitar solo for William Dithavong's
songs? Was it William himself? Whoever it was, did an excellent job,
consider pre 75'. (eg: LeumgNonBorLong, Sao Lycee, KamMa HatKanMai,
etc..)

lha and all,
i believe Philipino guys play guitar solo and other guitars for william
in the old days.

beside khamteum, the old singers/composers who are still singing and
composing lao songs until today are, Ajarn Por Trichan (Montreal,
Canada), Sor Seansirivanh, Phomma Phimmasone (Canada), Khamla Norkeo
(USA), Khamtoun Vongsanith, Black Bear Meedam or Sanong Ounvong, Kor
Viseth, Malichansouk (france), Senesakda (Laos) etc. i don't know what
happen to Bounthong Vongsaly, never heard any song from him after he
went back to laos from france during the mid 70.

I often saw Khamteum at Pa Thong restaurant. I beleive he was
interesting Sao Nam peung (honey) MuengChanh. For me Sor SengSrivanh
(Oregon, USA)is the best song writer. He wrote songs for many well
known singers including Khamteum and Phomma Phimmasone when he was RL
police officer.

I'm interested in "Nam-perng Viengchan" not Meung-Chan. :) :) :)

I'm surprised Xay Siengsavanh hasn't come out to defend the new
artists. Maybe he is too busy counting money, the loan officer :)

Yeah, we do miss the good oldies.

all,

i recently met KoViseth somewhere between san diego and phoenix. he was
as surprised as i were when we met each other at a rest stop.
i nagged him to sing 'tai-dam lam-phan' but he refused. perhaps next
time.

he currently lives in phoenix. even have his home phone number. so
anybody wants to hear him sing just call him up. it will cost you a
pack of beerlao.

now about acharn khamlah nokeo: he lives in nashville, tennessee. he is
still lively and fiery as he has always been even after doing time at
the phontong hotel in vientiane for his loud mouth criticising the Lao
PDR regime and pissing off sisavad Kheomootanh big time.

Bounthieng Manivong (Xepone) is still singing very well (hardly any
chanage in his voice quality) in Melbourne, Australia. He has three
Casettes produced in the early 90's ( 2 of them produced by my
company)... in fact, my company did the FIRST ever Lao Karaoke cassette
in the world - only 3 songs from Bounthieng.

I saw many CDs sang by the Manivong family. Are they a ta-kune Lao
singers? What about the Sayavong? I happened to have couple CDs sang by
Oukeo Sayavong and some from his sisters...?
